Prep (6 to 11 years old)

All our teachers come from different backgrounds and are all qualified with either an English or French degree

Our multicultural staff brings a specific atmosphere that reflects our values. In all primary classes, the pupils have a large amount of English hours:

  • CP/Year 2 (6 yrs old) – 6 hours 55 min of English per week
  • CE1/Year 3 (7 yrs old) – 8 hours 40 min of English per week
  • CE2/Year 4 (8 yrs old) – 9 hours 40 min of English per week
  • CM1/Year 5 (9 yrs old) –  9 hours 40 min of English per week
  • CM2/Year 6 (10 yrs old) – 9 hours 40 min of English per week

Whilst academic attainment is still very important, our approach allows our pupils to develop into more sensitive, creative, and open-minded individuals.

EPC

We offer a tailor-made  English Preparatory Course (EPC) to pupils who want to switch to the English system at the end of their primary schooling. As pupils follow mainly the French Maths curriculum, we consolidate pupils’ understanding in Maths of both the French and English curriculum.

To do this we have put a programme in place to familiarise pupils with the content as prescribed by the English Maths curriculum. Alongside this, pupils will also receive lessons to reinforce their English skills and prepare them eventually for external examinations such as the 10+ and/or the 11+ if they so wish and if required by their choice of school.

The lessons are offered from the beginning of CM1 (Year 5)  and continued throughout CM2 (Year 6). Parents wishing to partake in the course by providing proof of subscription to a secondary school.

Computing

We offer Information Technology (IT) sessions to all pupils from Year 2 (CP) – Year 6 (CM2).

In addition to this, all classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and tablets available for use in classrooms as a tool to enhance and extend pupils learning in the digital age.

We follow the programmes of study as set out in the National Primary curriculum. The three aspects of the computing curriculum include Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy with a particular focus on E-safety.

Art

Art lessons are taught in English. From CE2 (Year 4) onwards, Art and History of Art lessons take place in the art studio with a dedicated art teacher. Pupils learn about a wide range of disciplines as well as the historical events which have influenced Art and Design. They are encouraged to develop critical thinking skills by analysing and evaluating artworks.

Pupils become familiar with a range of materials and techniques throughout the year. In addition to a strong emphasis on developing traditional skills, pupils also learn through experimentation and risk taking, having a lot of fun being creative and in freedom of expression!

Music

Music classes form part of the curriculum from Moyenne Section onwards. The lessons are taught by an English music teacher. Pupils have the opportunity to discover the different rhythms, to sing, and to learn about musical instruments and the great composers.

Parents are invited to a musical performance and showcase during the academic year.

Dance

Classes up to and including CP (Year 2), have a weekly class of dance led by a teacher graduated from the Royal Academy of Dance. Pupils are taught physical expression by using the children’s imagination; the teacher develops their sense of balance and co-ordination.

Parents are invited to a musical performance and showcase during the academic year.

Sports

We value Sport to develop independence, resilience, as well as fairness and respect. From a very young age, we encourage a love for sport and physical activity and emphasise the opportunities it provides.

Our sports coaches ensure that pupils enjoy every aspect of sport. They teach our children to become physically confident, developing health in an environment in which they feel safe. Children have the use of a large, local indoor sports hall, as well as the use of our own gym for their sports lessons.

We cover a range of competitive games – netball, tag rugby, sports hall athletics, badminton, cricket, as well as gymnastics. We have specialist coaches for tag rugby in the autumn term and cricket in the summer term. Our well attended football club for ages 6 – 11  is very popular!

Our lessons provide fun and purposeful opportunities for the children to enjoy English sports (some of which are totally new to them) and consider the importance of health and fitness in their lives.

We compete in many matches and tournaments against other French and English schools throughout the year in a range of sports, and pride ourselves on our good sportsmanship and team spirit.

Fencing

From CE1 (Year 3) onwards fencing is part of our sport curriculum. Children have a weekly one hour lesson and are taught by recognised French and British fencing coaches, bringing physical prowess, mental discipline, team and individual skills and increased self-confidence to our pupils.

L’Ecole de Battersea’s fencing programme is taught in partnership with Escrime Academy. The school follows the official Federation teaching programme (which includes graded badges) and children are encouraged to take part in various regional and national competitions at weekends.

Day trips

Being situated in the centre of London the schools are well placed to benefit from world-class theatres, museums, historical buildings, zoos, and many other attractions.

From CE2 (Year 4) onwards pupils go on residential trips to France and Great Britain.

“The teaching is excellent and the school always does their best for each individual child.”
